Remembering Dr. June Dobbs Butts: A Trailblazer in Black Sexual Health

As we celebrate Black History Month, we must take the time to honor and remember the pioneering individuals who have made significant contributions to the Black community. One such individual is Dr. June Dobbs Butts, who passed away in 2019.
Dr. Butts was a licensed clinical psychologist, sex therapist, and author who dedicated her career to promoting open and honest conversations about sex and sexuality, particularly within the Black community. She was a strong advocate for the importance of sexual health and education, and worked tirelessly to break down the barriers and taboos that often prevent individuals from seeking help and guidance.
Dr. Butts was a trailblazer in her field, and her work has had a profound impact on the way we understand and approach sexual health in the Black community. She was the first African American woman to graduate from the prestigious Masters and Johnson Institute for Sexual Research, and went on to become one of the most respected and sought-after experts in the field of sexual health.
In addition to her work as a therapist, Dr. Butts also made important contributions as an author and speaker. Her book, “Sexuality and the Sacred: Sources for Theological Reflection,” was widely hailed as an important contribution to the field of sexual theology, and she frequently gave lectures and presentations on a wide range of sexual health topics.
Dr. Butts was a personal hero of mine, and at Melanin Sex Therapy, I strive to be just like her in encouraging open and honest conversations about sex and sexuality, particularly within the Black community. I believe that by breaking down the barriers and taboos that often prevent individuals from seeking help and guidance, we can create a more informed and empowered community.
If you’re interested in working with me to improve your sexual health and wellbeing, I encourage you to reach out to me at Melanin Sex Therapy. Together, we can work to create a more open and accepting society where everyone can feel empowered to take control of their sexual health.
In honor of Dr. June Dobbs Butts, let’s continue to work towards breaking down the barriers and taboos that often prevent individuals from seeking help and guidance when it comes to their sexual health.
