A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE: REFLECTING ON ROE'S 51ST ANNIVERSARY
Today, on the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I find myself reflecting on my own reproductive story, particularly the challenges I faced as a Black woman navigating the United States healthcare system.
In 2007, at 19 years old and a sophomore in college, I discovered I was pregnant. Despite concerns, my doctor reassured me, emphasizing my youth and health. However, as my pregnancy progressed, unexpected complications arose. Elevated blood pressure led to a confusing ER visit, where I was dismissed despite being in labor. The journey continued with excruciating headaches, high blood pressure, and ultimately, an emergency C-section.
The postpartum period brought new challenges. Unexplained headaches persisted, and after days of uncertainty, a hematoma was discovered, leading to another surgery. Throughout, the medical system failed to provide answers or adequate care. It was a traumatic experience compounded by the insensitivity of medical professionals.
Years later, when I obtained my medical records, I discovered a significant blood clot on my placenta. My son, Jaiden, and I were fortunate to survive such a life-threatening condition. As I reflect on Roe's anniversary, I realize the importance of not just fighting for abortion rights but also for justice in healthcare.
My story is a testament to the systemic issues Black women face in healthcare. It's not just about reproductive rights; it's about equitable and fair treatment for all. I want more children, but the scars of my past experiences linger. The systemic racism in our medical system has robbed me of that for that I am so fucking angry. The fight for justice must address the disparities that persist in maternal healthcare.
As we commemorate Roe's anniversary, let's not forget that the struggle goes beyond legal rights. It's about advocating for a healthcare system that treats every individual with dignity and equality. My journey may be a difficult one, but it's a story of resilience, survival, and the need for systemic change.
